Book #4 Discipleship Project: College Ministry

by Rodrigo Ortiz, Staff

Discipleship Project: College Ministry, the last installment of Lucas Leys and David Noboa’s series on youth discipleship, ends with a bang! Although this book is intended for college students, all the lessons apply to any adult’s faith walk, regardless of age.

The “Unfinished Business from the Past” lesson stood out to me. This lesson talks about how circumstances and experiences that have not been fully resolved bring instability, incorrect behavior, and problems to our lives and relationships. Some of those experiences could be a broken relationship, abuse, or excessively controlling parents. All these experiences create emotional predispositions that need to be healed.

Lucas and David share some practical advice and steps we can take with young adults to encourage them to talk about and face those past experiences. “Many live in silent suffering that they carry day by day, and despite having come to Christ, their wounds still need to be treated,” the authors state. “It is not that Jesus’ sacrifice was not enough, but sometimes the wounds are so strong that they leave emotional scars that we need to deal with in a special way.”

“It is not that Jesus’ sacrifice was not enough, but sometimes the wounds are so strong that they leave emotional scars that we need to deal with in a special way.”

This lesson ends with a reminder that forgiveness is one of the most sublime Christian disciplines. It is what God does, and it is what we must do. Forgiving does not mean justifying anyone but freeing ourselves from those actions controlling us through the emotions they produce.

We know the struggles and challenges that young people face, and it is not an easy task for Christian leaders to disciple them. Many people are praying for you and the youth you serve. Resources like The Disciple Project can equip and encourage you to continue to do the work God has called you to do!

Discipleship Project: College Ministry is part of an existing themed e625 series for children, tweens, teens, and young adults, published in English in 2024. This series helps leaders connect children with the Word of God and His plan for abundant life, which is none other than becoming more like Jesus every day.
