The Systems Thinking conference took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the Embassy Suites Hotel. The week-long training motivated current participants to share their vision, get “out of the box,” climb off the “ladder of inference,” and breakthrough in leadership. Facilitators Ron Carter (Birmingham 1999), Oscar Benavides (Dallas 2009), Myron Bernard (Seattle/Tacoma 2011), and Liza Cagua-Koo (Boston 2006) worked in tandem to guide attendees toward harmony in their personal lives and youth work.
Mike Trout (Chicago 2007) delivered a fascinating keynote that included an in-person panel of young men and women from his ministry, YMEN. The youth shared their personal testimonies and fielded questions during a Q&A session.
The packed week of thought-provoking roundtable discussions and case study analysis also allowed for some free time to enjoy Grand Rapids museums, coffee houses, shopping, and walks (or scooter rides) along the Grand River downtown. Participants were treated to dinner at local restaurants of their choice.
The Friday night closing celebration featured a time of worship and a word from pastor and Moody Radio host Chris Brooks of Detroit’s Woodside Bible Church. After the final song, a group of participants gathered on the conference room stage to lead the room in worship, including a freestyle rap session and a spoken word reading. The DVULI class of 2022 made a joyful noise unto the Lord, joined by DVULI staff, alumni John Park (Los Angeles 2010), Myrna Craig (Cleveland 2013), and Adrian McConnell (Dallas 2011), as well as some moved hotel staff.
